Introduction to a Geek

I am a geek.  Not necessarily because I am dorky or socially inept (although I sometimes am), but mostly because I completely obsess over everything I am even briefly passionate about.  Here's an introduction to some of the things I geek out over the most:
Game of Thrones
Everything about this show and book series absolutely captivates.  What isn't there to love about knights and kings and queens and ladies all wrapped into an inter-continental political battle?  Not only that, but the fantasy element along a backdrop of realistically gritty politics keeps me interested and hooked on every episode and patiently waiting for the next book.  If you haven't seen this show, I urge you to at least check out the first episode or if you have a large chunk of time to fill, please read the first book.  I promise you won't regret it.
Video Games
I'll be the first to admit that I am not the best video game player or even the most mediocre.  That doesn't mean I can't have fun or research their lore, however.  I've poured the most hours into Civilization V, an epic country-building game that places you as a ruler of a specific country to lead to victory over the others.  There are other games I like though such as Skyrim, a game about one powerful individual's quest to destroy the dragons, and Dark Souls, a challenging adventure quest game about bringing light back to a world being slowly eaten by the darkness.  I haven't beaten either of these yet, but someday I might.
Music
This is an extremely broad category of things to geek out about, but it was very hard to pinpoint a specific genre I felt I especially obsessed over.  I have spent hours reading about every detail of a song's composition or writer on Wikipedia and memorizing the lyrics because a song would not leave my mind.  Some of my favorite artists are Fall Out Boy, Coldplay, and Taylor Swift.

I hope this helped you get to know me a bit more and if you ever want to chat about any of my interests, feel free!

  1. Hey! I really liked getting to know a little bit more about who you are! I have never seen Game of Thrones, but I've heard nothing but great things about it! As for video games, I'm more of a watcher than a player. It's not because I don't want to play, I just can't. I played a fighting one and it was so scary. I had no idea what I was doing and zero control of my character. As for music, you just listed two of my favorite singers. Thank you for sharing who you are! You sound pretty cool!

    1. You should definitely check out Game of Thrones if you have a few days to kill! Honestly, I often have zero control of my video game characters as well, but it's super fun playing with friends sometimes or just waving a sword around. Thanks for your comment and it was really nice getting to know you too.

  2. Hello! I have actually never watched Game of Thrones before but I can definitely appreciate a passion for it. On the video games end of things, I can definitely relate. Dark Souls III might be one of my favorite games I've played even though I found it almost impossible to beat! As far as your music choices go, I absolutely love all of your favorite artists! I enjoyed reading your post and thank you for the introduction!

    1. Dark Souls III is absolutely amazing. I've only watched my friend play so far, but I am very excited about it. Glad you liked the music and intro as well!

  3. From one geek to another, Joanne, I have to say: geek on! geek out! geeks rule! Although, technically speaking, I am probably more of a nerd than a geek, ha ha; my husband is the geek. :-)

Anyway, I have got a video for you: Mahabharata meets Game of Thrones ... there is some Game-of-Thrones vibe in the Ramayana too of course as you've seen in the intrigue in Dasharatha's court, but the Mahabharata is the one that really resonates with Game of Thrones... so, that will start up in Week 5, but keep it in mind when you do the project exploring this week and next. You might even use this video to look up some characters at Wikipedia to learn more about the Game of Thrones comparisons. Like Jon Snow and Karna, two of my favorite characters; here is the Karna article at Wikipedia: Karna ... the Ramayana is great, but the Mahabharata is the epic that I like the best; you can see what you think as the semester goes along and you get to meet the cast of characters in each one!

    1. Thank you so much for your suggestion! I was really shocked to discover so many similarities between Karna and Jon Snow, who is also one of my favorite characters. I'm very excited to learn more and read the Mahabharata.

  4. Hey Joanne! I love Game of Thrones and am so glad to meet another fan. I am very excited to see where this upcoming season ends up taking us to, I have not read the books. I too love Civ V and grew up with my dad introducing me to numerous other video games as well. I hope you have a great semester!

    1. Same! I'm so sad that the season is coming out later than last year. Civ V is so fun; my friends and I sometimes spend days playing. Hope you have a great semester as well!

  5. I have heard so much about this show, but still have yet to watch it. My cousins go nuts talking about it. I have never been into videos games mostly because growing up my father never got my siblings and I electronics, he was more about 4wheelers, and go karts. I love Taylor Swift as well. In the beginning I didn’t enjoy her as much, but after her second album I fell in love.

    1. You should definitely watch it! Go karts are fun but I was never very good at racing, haha. Yes, I love her earlier albums; they're so good!

  6. Hi Joanna! It's so great to see someone create an introduction revolving around their geekiness. I am a fellow geek, so it really spoke to me. I have seen Game of Thrones, but I'm stuck in season three because life got in the way. It's just such a big commitment of a show! I'm definitely less than mediocre at video games, considering the kids I used to babysit beat me every single time. I tend to geek out over movies, television shows, and books, but my favorites change pretty frequently. My favorite bands at the moment are One Direction (it's a recent addiction, unfortunately) and Fall Out Boy (not so recent). My interests change frequently, but I definitely obsess over things that catch my eye! I look forward to reading your stories this semester!

    1. Oh you need to keep watching Game of Thrones! I definitely understand about how hard it is to find time to watch it though. I am probably one of the worst video game players in existence, but it's still a fun way to pass the time! One Direction is definitely a fun band to listen to, and I am so happy you like Fall Out Boy too.

    2. I ease dropped into your comments but I had to share my pain because am also stuck in season 3 of Game of Thrones! I really, really want to catch up before the new season begins and since they pushed back their release date I'm hoping that might just happen!

  7. I love Game of Thrones! I didn't get into it right away when everyone else did because I assumed I wouldn't like it but as soon as the season 6 premiere came out I couldn't stand being out of the loop anymore. It's all people were talking about. So this summer, all I did was watch GoT and now I'm caught up and ready for season 7 yay!
I love how you chose to introduce yourself. I think we all have a sort of geekiness to us. We all have our own things we obsess over which make us unique. It's a great way to get to know people as well as introduce ourselves.

    1. Now you need to read the books! I'm so glad you like the TV show though! It is absolutely one of my most favorite things ever. I'm really glad you like my introduction as well!

  8. What's the difference between a geek and a dork? That sounds like a Dr. Seuss book. I'm sure I qualify for both :/

Oh man, Game of Thrones is so good. I've read some of the ASOIF books, but I actually stopped intentionally. There are two reasons:
    1. The wait in between them is so brutal. I just decided to say nope, and wait until they're all finished.
    2. They'd be better than the show. I think reading *after* watching is the best strategy. I know, it sounds weird. I look at it like this: If you read before you watch, then you'll be upset about what's *not* there. If you read after you watch, then you'll be happy about all the things that are added in.

I am grumpy we're getting two seasons that are so short. Six episodes will not hold me over for an entire year. I'd rather wait an extra year and get all 13 episodes in one go.

Hey I like Civilization, Skyrim (Did you see they're doing a re-release with better graphics?), and Dark Souls. Well, to be honest, Dark Souls stresses me out a lot, but I was really into for a while. I'm pretty sure if you play Dark Souls at all, that you definitely fall somewhere above "mediocre." In the words of the venerable Mr. T, that game 'don't pity no fools.'

I took Stats at a different college, so maybe I had a bad teacher? I'm most likely just bad with maths, but I'll be happy to blame it on the teacher instead :) Hopefully your degree will make more use of it than mine!

    1. Oh, haha I kinda picture dorks as people who are a little less socially skilled, but I mean yeah I'm probably both too. Ugh, the wait is terrible. Speaking as someone who only started about four year ago (oh god), I'm relatively new to this waiting between books, so I feel like I can't complain when there are people who have been waiting 20 years. I can see your point with reading after you watch, but I had a friend that was more into the books first which is why I got into those first. The six episodes thing is so killer :(. I really wish there were two full seasons, but I suppose if the story only calls for 13 more episodes it makes sense. I did not see the re-release! I doubt my computer could handle more cause it already struggles somewhat with the older graphics, but I'll have to check it out. Haha, trust me I am terrible at video games. It takes me way longer than my friends to beat games. Oh, bad teachers definitely ruin subjects for me too, so I get it. My degree is in biomedical engineering, so I would say it makes slightly more use of it, haha. I've heard of The Witcher! I've been thinking of trying it out sometime because I've heard so many good things.

  9. Post-Script: You should check out the video-game series named Dragon Age. Another one you might enjoy is The Witcher. It's based off a series of books with the same title. Just an fyi!

  10. Hi Joanna! I recently jumped on the Game of Thrones train and I must say I LOVE IT! I am still stuck on season 3 but I'm hoping to trump through before the new season comes out though. What I truly wish I had time for was to read the books. I know if I get started though I will be hooked and not want to put it down to do school work. I'm not much of a gamer but I do enjoy Mario Brothers every now and again! I look forward to reading more of your stories and maybe seeing some Game of Thrones references!

  11. Hi JoAnne! I can totally relate to your obsessive, dive-right-in qualities! I once had a boss who told me, "Listen, you go all in or not at all, and you just need to know that and understand that about your personality. And once you recognize that fact about yourself, you'll be able to navigate your time and interests much more successfully!" He was so, so right. Now I'm able to decide: Do I have time to obsess about this and add this into my life, or do I need to leave it be for right now? Looks like you share similar choices, if they're not yet conscious choices for you yet. ;-)

I appreciated your quick descriptions of the video games that you like to play. I am in noway related to the gaming world, and so these quick little synopsis help me appreciate how interesting the games really can be. Thanks!

    1. Haha, I'm glad you can relate! I definitely have a lot of trouble trying to pick interests, but I'm slowly getting better and not becoming too obsessed. The games are super interesting! You should totally check them out if you're able to.

  12. I too have heard a lot about Game of Thrones. I really want to start it but with the amount of Korean dramas I’m watching (I’m watching four atm), I don’t think I’ll have the time LOL. Maybe during winter break I will try to start it! If you would like a show recommendation, I HIGHLYYYYYYYY recommend Supernatural. It follows the journey of two brothers (who are VERY good-looking btw) as they encounter and fight off the evil in the world. From demons to angels to even vampires, it really is my favorite American TV show and I couldn’t recommend it enough. I hope you will also find enough interest in it and join the Supernatural fandom. From reading your introduction, I can really tell that you are a dedicated person and I truly admire that about a person. I love how you have so many passions, even ones you’re not the best at. I definitely hope to be as passionate as you one day!

    1. Aw thank you! Haha, you should definitely try if you have time! I have actually seen the first episode of Supernatural and it was very intriguing! Haven't had time to watch the rest though! I want to be able to watch some more soon though especially with the mythological aspects because I really love mythology.

  14. Hello Joanne,
I would like to start off by saying that I believe that everyone has at least a little inner geek in them. Some people are geeks about sports and others about pokemon or something else. I have heard great things about Game of Thrones but I have not got the chance to watch it. Many of my friends’ watch Game of Thrones and them seem very excited about it so I think that once I get some free time I may binge watch it.

    1. That's definitely true! Everybody has something they're really passionate about. If you have the time, I would highly recommend it! You won't regret it :)

  15. It's important to obsess over things! (Healthily, of course!)
I wish that I was a more of a "nerd"! Always have!

It's so silly... I'm an actor, but I just can't get myself into GOT. I've tried! I've also been told that I need to make it to the 9th episode, so I guess I just haven't tried hard enough. I graduate in the spring, so maybe I'll find myself with enough time to just force myself into it. Have you watched Stranger Things yet? I was just in a play called Let The Right One In and it has a SUPER similar vibe- I was obsessed with drawing parallels!! Also, Let The Right One In is going to be a show on TNT pretty soon (sometime in 2017?) I think you'd be interested in that!

I have not watched Stranger Things but I have heard lots of good things about it! I'm going to check it out when I have time! Wow, one of my friends went to see Let The Right One In and she said it was fantastic! I'll definitely have to check it out then!

  16. Hi Joanne! I'm a geek too, so don't even worry about it! I haven't watched Game of Thrones yet. I really want to try it out sometime because I've never heard a bad review about it from anyone! Hopefully I'll be able to do that soon...I just need to get my hands on an HBOgo account! That's awesome that you enjoy playing video games, even if you aren't the best. It shows that you just like to have a good time and don't take it too seriously! I love music as well!! I went to Taylor Swift's 1989 concert last year and she is incredible! I absolutely love that album! I think music is so amazing! I'm excited to read some of your stories!

  17. Hi Joanne! I have always been curious about everyone's obsession with Games of Thrones. It seems as though everyone is watching the show religiously. I have attempted to play video games, but I definitely need more practice. I lose incessantly. It's sad actually, however, I love Coldplay as well! It was so great to meet you! 18. Hello Joanna! Oh man oh man do I love Game of Thrones!! I am enthralled will the TV show when its on and literally can’t wait for it to come back on. I haven’t gotten to read the books yet but it is on my bucket list of series to read! I am right with you in just about everything you said! I am a very proud geek about all the above that you have listed. I have beaten Skyrim and Darksouls multiple time.. at least as much as one can beat either one of the games that is!

Congrats on beating Dark Souls so many times though, that's pretty impressive!

  19. Hi Joanne! I am also a geek. I geek about different things, of course. I am a complete and total geek about Grey's Anatomy and I have convinced all of my friends to start watching it so that we can all geek out about it together. We debate about if couples should have broken up, who should've gotten together that never did, and the best episodes of the different seasons. It's great! I think if I started Game of Thrones, I would geek out over that from what I've heard! It sounds great!

  20. Hi Joanne! I love that you are a self-proclaimed geek. I feel the same way about myself! I haven’t checked out Game of Thrones yet, but I feel like I need to. So many people have recommended it. It looks great, but I’m too scared of getting sucked into a Netflix series right now when I should be studying for midterms. /: Too risky.
Also, you have great taste in music! I feel the same way about getting obsessed with bands or songs.

  22. I just got your messages on my Introduction and I also don't know how I haven't seen your introduction yet either!! I haven't seen the last season of GoT yet but I keep meaning to! Have you ever seen Doctor Who? It isn't anything like GoT but it is an excellent show to nerd out on! I only got into Skyrim within the past year when I met my new roommates introduced me to it! They couldn't believe I hadn't played it considering my dragon obsession. I also love all of the artists you mentioned! I''m sure you listen to Panic! At the Disco if you listen to Fall Out Boy. But if not you should! The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus is another excellent band that is similar to the others. I look forward to going and reading your stories! It was nice to finally meet you even though it is the end of the semester!

  23. Hi, I'm Madelyn! You sound just like my roommate!! She is very passionate about the same things that you are. I have never been much into video games, and I suck at them too, but she loves them. She is really good at them too! She always beats the games. One of her favorite games is The Last of Us! I have played it some too and its pretty awesome. It's a post-apocalyptic game so you go around shooting zombies and stuff. I hope you've enjoyed your semester in this class. Glad I could say hi before the semester ended!
